Downtown is alive every night of summer with performing arts at the California, Jose, Repertory and other theaters. But with the best of the best weather in the world, people love to stay outdoors, dining on patios and sidewalk cafes in San Pedro Square, off San Fernando Street and along South First Street. On Wednesday, Starlight Cinemas, free outdoor film screenings of classic and all-time film favorites, beckon in the Historic District. San Pedro Square or SoFA. Each screening turns into an event, full of surprises like "Zombie" crawls, treasure hunts, musical chairs, dance lessons or you-name-it. Music in the Park each Thursday from June 2-Aug. 25 is a San Jose tradition for more than 20 years, come to Plaza de Cesar Chavez to see international stars perform to energetic, appreciative audiences. South First Friday and Street Market bring the SoFA arts district alive the first Friday of each month (except July 1). The various venues stay open late, and are free.
